How List Fatigue is Assessed
List fatigue sets in when subscribers stop engaging because they are receiving too much email relative to how valuable they find it. The clearest signals are a falling open rate, a falling click rate, a rising unsubscribe rate, and high send frequency.
Fatigue is different from a disengaged-but-not-unsubscribed list. A fatigued list still opens occasionally and unsubscribes when you send too much; a disengaged list has simply stopped paying attention. The distinction matters for how you respond.
See our list fatigue glossary term and email frequency calculator for the send-cadence view.
How to Reverse List Fatigue
The fastest lever is frequency. Cut sends by a third for a month and watch whether open rate recovers. If it does, your cadence was too aggressive. If it doesn't, the problem is content relevance rather than volume — and more segmentation is the answer, not fewer emails.
A Practical Recovery Sequence
Reduce frequency, then run a re-engagement campaign to inactive segments, then re-segment by the behaviour that actually predicts purchases. Track your fatigue score monthly. If it stays above 70 for two consecutive months, a structural change is needed — not another tweak to the subject line.
