Definition
List fatigue is a state of subscriber burnout in which an audience stops engaging with a sender's emails because they receive too much email relative to how valuable they find it. It is distinct from list decay: a fatigued list still opens occasionally and unsubscribes when over-sent, while a disengaged list has simply stopped paying attention.
Fatigue is a gradual process. Engagement drifts down across consecutive sends, complaints creep up, and eventually deliverability suffers as inbox providers see your emails being ignored or marked as spam.
Signs of List Fatigue
- Open rate trending down across consecutive sends
- Click rate declining faster than open rate
- Unsubscribe rate rising above ~0.5%
- Deliverability deteriorating for no obvious technical reason
- The same content performing worse over time
How to Reverse List Fatigue
- Reduce frequency — cut sends by a third and watch whether opens recover.
- Re-engage inactive segments — run a winback campaign before deleting.
- Re-segment by behaviour — send more to engaged, less to the rest.
- Improve relevance — fatigue is often a content problem wearing a frequency mask.
- Let subscribers choose frequency — a preference centre reduces burnout.

Frequently Asked Questions
A fatigued list reacts when you send too much — opens drop and unsubscribes rise. A disengaged list has stopped paying attention entirely and shows low engagement regardless of frequency.
There is no universal number. The right frequency keeps engagement stable — if cutting sends restores opens, your cadence was too aggressive; if not, the problem is relevance.
Yes. Inbox providers monitor engagement, and a large block of unengaged subscribers ignoring your mail can pull down your sending reputation and inbox placement.
