Definition
Unique click rate is the percentage of delivered emails that received at least one click from a distinct subscriber, counting each subscriber only once. Unlike total click rate (which includes multiple clicks from the same subscriber), unique click rate shows how many individual people took action in response to your email.
Unique click rate is the more meaningful engagement metric because it reflects the breadth of your campaign's impact. A high total click rate but low unique click rate indicates that a small number of subscribers are clicking many links, while the majority did not engage at all.
Unique vs Total Click Rate
| Metric | Calculation | What It Measures |
|---|---|---|
| Unique click rate | Unique clicks / Delivered × 100 | Percentage of individual subscribers who clicked |
| Total click rate | Total clicks / Delivered × 100 | Total click events including repeat clicks |
Example
If 1,000 people receive an email, 200 click at least once, and 50 of those click a second link:
| Metric | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Unique click rate | 200 / 1,000 × 100 | 20% |
| Total click rate | (200 + 50) / 1,000 × 100 | 25% |
Unique Click Rate vs Click-to-Open Rate
| Metric | Calculation | What It Tells You |
|---|---|---|
| Unique click rate | Unique clicks / Delivered | How many subscribers clicked |
| Click-to-open rate (CTOR) | Unique clicks / Unique opens | How engaging the content was for those who opened |
Average Benchmarks
| Industry | Unique Click Rate (Typical) |
|---|---|
| Ecommerce | 2.5-5% |
| B2B SaaS | 3-7% |
| Media/Publishing | 2-4% |
| Non-profit | 3-6% |
When Unique Click Rate Is Most Useful
- Campaign performance comparison: Comparing unique click rates across campaigns reveals which content resonates with the broadest audience
- List health monitoring: A declining unique click rate over time signals list fatigue or declining content relevance
- Segmentation effectiveness: Higher unique click rates in targeted segments validate your segmentation strategy
- A/B testing: Unique click rate is a better success metric than total click rate for A/B tests because it reflects real subscriber behaviour

Frequently Asked Questions
Unique click rate tells you how many distinct subscribers found your content engaging enough to take action. Total click rate can be inflated by a small number of subscribers clicking multiple links. For understanding real engagement breadth, unique click rate is the superior metric.
A good unique click rate depends on your industry and list quality. For most industries, 2-5% is average, 5-8% is good, and above 8% is excellent. Compare your unique click rate to your own historical performance and industry benchmarks rather than absolute numbers.
Yes, though it is unusual. It can happen when subscribers click links in preview panes without triggering an open event, or when the email is forwarded and a non-original recipient clicks a link. In practice, unique click rate is almost always lower than unique open rate.
Optimise for unique click rate. A high unique click rate means your content resonated with a broad audience. A high total click rate with a low unique click rate means your most engaged subscribers are clicking everything — a smaller audience than you think.
Apple MPP does not directly affect unique click rate because clicks are not pre-loaded like opens. However, if Apple MPP inflates your unique open rate, the unique click rate and click-to-open rate become more important engagement measures.
