Definition
Revenue per email sent (RPE) is calculated by dividing the total revenue attributed to an email campaign by the number of emails sent. It answers a single, powerful question: how much money does each email in the send generate?
RPE is one of the most direct measures of email performance because it sits closest to business outcome. Open rate tells you about attention, click rate about engagement, but RPE tells you about money. It makes campaigns comparable regardless of list size and converts abstract engagement into a number finance understands.
Formula
RPE = (Total Attributed Revenue ÷ Emails Sent)
For example, a campaign that generates £5,000 from 100,000 emails sent has an RPE of £0.05. A highly targeted campaign of 10,000 emails generating £2,000 has an RPE of £0.20.
Why RPE Matters
- Comparable across campaigns — list size no longer distorts the picture.
- Attributable to business outcome — it measures value, not engagement.
- Forecastable — historical RPE drives revenue projections.
- Segmentation proof — targeted lists usually show dramatically higher RPE.

Frequently Asked Questions
Effectively, for a single campaign: RPE uses emails sent while revenue per recipient is often calculated per delivered or per list contact. Both measure the same thing — financial value per email — with slightly different denominators.
It varies hugely by industry and list quality. Ecommerce campaigns often see RPE of £0.05-£0.30, while high-intent B2B lists can exceed £1. Benchmark against your own history rather than an absolute number.
Improve targeting and segmentation, make offers more relevant, and move low-value subscribers out of broadcast sends. Higher RPE is usually a relevance story, not a volume story.
