Definition
Engagement filtering means that whether your email reaches the inbox, spam folder, or is blocked depends on how each individual recipient has interacted with your past emails. ISPs like Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo now prioritise individual engagement signals over global sender reputation.
How It Works
Each subscriber accumulates an engagement score based on their opens, clicks, replies, forwards, deletes-without-reading, and spam complaints. A subscriber who always opens and clicks gets your mail in the primary inbox. A subscriber who has not opened in six months gets your mail filtered to spam — even if your overall sender reputation is excellent.
Why It Matters
Engagement filtering means you cannot rely on a good sender reputation alone. You must also manage list health by removing or re-engaging inactive subscribers. This is why list hygiene directly affects deliverability at the per-subscriber level, not just at the domain level.
