Definition
An email performance baseline is a set of reference metrics calculated from a representative historical period that serves as the comparison point for evaluating current and future campaign performance. Without a baseline, teams cannot reliably determine whether a campaign performed well or poorly — they can only compare it to the previous campaign, which may itself have been unusually strong or weak.
A well-constructed baseline accounts for seasonality, campaign type and audience segment, producing realistic expectations rather than generic industry averages.
How to Establish a Baseline
- Select a historical period long enough to be statistically meaningful — typically three to six months — that excludes anomalous events
- Calculate average performance for each key metric segmented by campaign type: promotional, newsletter, transactional, triggered
- Document the baseline alongside the conditions under which it was measured — list size, sending frequency, season — so future comparisons are valid
Best Practices
- Recalculate baselines quarterly as list composition, content strategy and market conditions evolve
- Segment baselines by campaign type; comparing a promotional campaign against a newsletter baseline produces misleading conclusions
- Use baselines to set targets, not just to evaluate past performance — a baseline open rate of 22 percent becomes a starting point, not a ceiling
- Communicate baselines to stakeholders so performance discussions are grounded in data rather than subjective impressions
