Definition
Email list quality score is a single composite metric that summarises the health of your subscriber list on a 0-100 scale. It combines the signals that determine both engagement and deliverability, giving you an at-a-glance answer to: is this list getting better or worse?
The score aggregates engagement, bounce, complaint, freshness and growth data. Because deliverability is driven by how recipients respond to your mail, list quality is the leading indicator of inbox placement. A score that trends down predicts deliverability problems before they appear in your sending reports.
Score Components
| Factor | Typical Weight | What It Measures |
|---|---|---|
| Engagement rate | 30-40% | Opens and clicks relative to sends |
| Bounce rate | 20-25% | Hard and soft bounces |
| Spam complaint rate | 15-20% | Recipients marking mail as spam |
| List freshness | 10-15% | How recently addresses were acquired |
| List growth rate | 5-10% | Net subscriber additions |
Score Interpretation
| Score | Status | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 80-100 | Excellent | Maintain hygiene cadence |
| 60-79 | Good | Monitor monthly |
| 40-59 | Needs attention | Clean and re-engage |
| Below 40 | Serious | Stop new sends, fix root cause |
How to Improve List Quality Score
- Use confirmed opt-in so new subscribers genuinely want your email
- Clean bounces — remove hard bounces promptly and retry soft bounces
- Segment by engagement — send more to engaged, less to the rest
- Re-engage or remove inactive subscribers on a regular schedule
- Keep complaint rates low with clear subject lines and easy unsubscribe
- Monitor the score monthly to catch decline before it hits deliverability

Frequently Asked Questions
A score of 80-100 is excellent, 60-79 is good, 40-59 needs attention, and below 40 indicates serious list health problems. The trend matters more than the single number — a falling score predicts deliverability trouble.
List quality score measures the health of your subscriber list (engagement, bounces, complaints). Sender reputation is how ISPs rate your domain and IP based on that history. List quality is the input; sender reputation is the result.
Inbox providers use engagement as a primary delivery signal. A list full of unengaged, bouncing or complaining addresses trains ISPs to send your mail to spam, which damages inbox placement for everyone on the list.
Monthly is the practical cadence for most programmes. It is frequent enough to catch decline early while avoiding the noise of weekly fluctuations. If you are actively cleaning a list, check weekly until the score stabilises.
