Definition
List quality benchmarking evaluates the health and performance of an email list against comparable organisations — by industry, list size or business model — to identify whether current metrics represent a competitive advantage or a warning signal. Metrics benchmarked typically include engagement rates, bounce rates, complaint rates, inactive subscriber percentage and deliverability scores.
Internal benchmarking against your own historical performance tells you whether you are improving. External benchmarking tells you whether your improvement is keeping pace with the market.
Key List Quality Benchmarks
- Bounce rate relative to industry peers
- Spam complaint rate against provider thresholds and industry averages
- Inactive subscriber percentage — the proportion of a list that has not engaged in 90-plus days
- Deliverability rate segmented by major mailbox provider
- List churn rate compared to list growth rate
Best Practices
- Source benchmarks from reputable industry reports rather than aggregated blog posts with unverified data
- Benchmark against your own industry, not cross-industry averages that include sectors with fundamentally different email dynamics
- Use benchmarking to set realistic targets — an open rate that ranks in the top quartile for your industry is a reasonable stretch goal
- Re-benchmark quarterly as industry norms shift with changes in technology, privacy regulation and consumer behaviour
