Definition
An email list freshness score combines multiple signals into a single indicator of list quality. It evaluates the percentage of subscribers acquired or last confirmed within a trailing window, the proportion of actively engaged subscribers, the recency of list cleaning and deduplication, and the rate at which inactive subscribers are removed or re-engaged. A high freshness score correlates with better deliverability and engagement outcomes.
Components
- Age distribution: What percentage of subscribers were acquired in the last 6, 12, and 24 months
- Engagement recency: Share of subscribers who opened or clicked in the last 30, 60, and 90 days
- Cleaning frequency: How recently the list was deduplicated, validated, and purged of hard bounces
- Suppression rate: Percentage of the list currently in suppression due to inactivity
- Re-engagement coverage: Percentage of risk-tier subscribers actively in re-engagement flows
Best Practices
- Calculate freshness monthly and track the trend direction — a declining score predicts future deliverability problems
- Set a minimum freshness threshold that triggers a hygiene intervention when breached
- Weight engagement recency most heavily since it is the strongest predictor of inbox placement
- Report freshness alongside net growth to show whether new additions are keeping pace with list degradation
