Definition
Inclusive email design is an approach that ensures every subscriber can access, understand and act on your email content regardless of ability, device, email client or environmental constraints. It goes beyond technical accessibility compliance to consider the full range of human diversity: vision impairments, motor difficulties, cognitive differences, language barriers, slow connections and older devices.
An inclusive email works for someone using a screen reader in dark mode on an Android phone just as well as it works for someone viewing it in a well-lit office on a 27-inch monitor. The goal is not designing for the average subscriber — it is designing so that no subscriber is excluded.
Key Principles
- Semantic HTML structure that screen readers can navigate logically
- Sufficient colour contrast for text on backgrounds
- Descriptive alt text for every image that conveys information
- Touch-friendly tap targets at least 44x44 pixels
- Plain-text versions that communicate the same message as the HTML
- Font sizing that remains readable without zooming
Best Practices
- Test emails with a screen reader before sending — this reveals structural issues that visual review misses
- Do not rely solely on colour to convey meaning; pair it with text or icons
- Use relative font sizes so subscribers who have increased their device text size can still read your content
- View every email in at least one accessibility testing tool before scheduling
