Definition
Email header analysis tools parse the full SMTP header of an email — the block of technical data that includes routing information, authentication results and spam filter assessments — and present it in a readable, structured format that non-technical marketers can act on.
Headers contain the complete journey of a message through mail servers. They show the originating IP address, every hop the message took, whether SPF, DKIM and DMARC checks passed, which spam filtering rules were applied and timestamps for each stage. Without header analysis, diagnosing a deliverability issue is largely guesswork.
What Header Tools Reveal
- The actual IP address that sent the email, which may differ from the ESP's IP if sub-accounts or proxies are involved
- Authentication results showing exactly which SPF, DKIM and DMARC checks passed or failed
- Spam score assessments and which specific rules triggered
- Timestamps and routing hops that identify where in the delivery chain delays occurred
Best Practices
- Examine headers from emails delivered to different providers to spot provider-specific issues
- Keep a record of healthy headers as a baseline for comparison during deliverability incidents
- Use header analysis tools as part of a pre-send checklist for every major campaign

Bounce Classification
Bounce classification uses SMTP codes (550, 551, 552, 553, 554, 450, 451, 452) and enhanced status codes to categorise permanent and transient delivery failures.
DMARC Alignment
DMARC identifier alignment determines whether the domain in the From header matches the domains used in SPF and DKIM authentication. Strict or relaxed.
DMARC Policy Tags
DMARC DNS record tags including v, p, sp, rua, ruf, pct, adkim, aspf, fo, rf, and ri control authentication policy, reporting, and alignment enforcement.
Acceptance Rate
Acceptance rate is the percentage of emails submitted for delivery that are accepted by the recipient's mail server, representing the first deliverability checkpoint before inbox placement is determined.
Email Acceptance Rate
Email acceptance rate measures the percentage of emails accepted by recipient mail servers versus total sent. It is a core deliverability metric that reveals whether your sending infrastructure is trusted by receiving servers.
Email Account Health Score
A composite metric that evaluates the overall health of an email sending programme based on deliverability, engagement, list quality, and compliance factors.
