Definition
A CTA heatmap is a visual representation of click activity overlaid on an email's design, with warmer colours indicating higher click density and cooler colours indicating areas subscribers ignored. Unlike a standard click report that lists raw link counts, a heatmap shows the spatial distribution of engagement — making it immediately clear whether the primary CTA is getting the attention it deserves or whether secondary links are drawing clicks away.
Heatmaps often reveal design problems that raw data obscures. A button that received 500 clicks sounds successful until the heatmap shows a nearby image that received 2,000 clicks because subscribers thought it was clickable. A CTA that received few clicks may simply be below the scroll line for most subscribers.
What CTA Heatmaps Reveal
- Whether the primary conversion action dominates click attention
- If non-clickable design elements are attracting phantom clicks and causing subscriber frustration
- How far down the email subscribers scroll before engaging
- Whether mobile and desktop click patterns differ significantly
Best Practices
- Compare heatmaps across email variants to see how layout changes affect click distribution
- Remove or de-emphasise elements that consistently attract clicks away from the primary CTA
- Test CTA placement against heatmap data rather than assumptions — what feels logical to the designer may not be where subscribers actually look
- Use heatmap data alongside conversion data; high clicks on the wrong CTA are worse than low clicks on the right one
