Definition
Email attribution fraud occurs when email marketing receives credit for conversions it did not meaningfully influence. Common sources of inflated attribution include last-click attribution that ignores prior non-email touchpoints, email opens triggered by Apple Mail Privacy Protection that inflate engagement metrics, and affiliate or partner emails counted as organic email performance. Attribution fraud leads to overinvestment in email based on inflated ROI figures and underinvestment in other channels whose contributions are being stolen by misattribution.
Common Sources
- Last-click bias: Email receives credit because it was the last touchpoint before conversion, even if the purchase decision was driven by other channels
- AMP false opens: Apple Mail Privacy Protection auto-opens emails, overstating open rates without actual engagement
- Bot and preview pane opens: Automated opens from security scanners and preview panes inflate engagement
- Cross-device blind spots: Conversions on a different device than the email was opened on may not be attributed
- Brand search attribution: Email drives a future brand search that is attributed to paid search rather than email
Best Practices
- Use multi-touch attribution models rather than last-click to distribute credit more fairly
- Filter AMP and automated opens from engagement metrics when possible
- Apply holdout testing to measure true incremental lift rather than reported attribution
- Cross-reference email attribution with marketing mix modeling results to validate direction
- Report attributed and incrementally measured metrics side by side with clear methodology notes
