Definition
The BAB framework (Before-After-Bridge) is a copywriting structure that opens by describing the subscriber's current situation (Before), then paints a compelling picture of what their life could look like after the problem is solved (After), and finally presents the product or service as the bridge that gets them there.
BAB is particularly effective for email marketing because it creates an emotional contrast between pain and relief. The Before section acknowledges the subscriber's current reality. The After section creates desire. The Bridge section makes the solution feel accessible.
The BAB Framework Breakdown
| Stage | Goal | Email Element | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before | Describe the current problem | Opening hook | "You are spending hours manually compiling email reports every week." |
| After | Paint the improved future | Vision of success | "Imagine logging in to a dashboard that shows every metric you need, updated automatically." |
| Bridge | Present the solution | Offer, CTA | "Our automated reporting tool connects to your ESP in 5 minutes and delivers your first report immediately." |
BAB vs Other Frameworks
| Framework | Structure | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| BAB | Before → After → Bridge | Transformation-focused offers |
| PAS | Problem → Agitate → Solution | Problem-focused corrective offers |
| FAB | Feature → Advantage → Benefit | Product-focused promotional emails |
| AIDA | Attention → Interest → Desire → Action | Content and storytelling |
BAB in Different Email Types
| Email Type | Before | After | Bridge |
|---|---|---|---|

| Course / education | "You know you should improve your email skills." | "Imagine writing emails that get 40% open rates." | "Our 6-week course takes you from beginner to expert." |
| Ecommerce product | "Your current skincare routine is not working." | "Clear, glowing skin in 30 days." | "Our starter kit has everything you need." |
| Service upgrade | "You are outgrowing your current plan." | "Unlimited access to every feature you need." | "Upgrade today and get 20% off your first month." |
How to Write BAB Emails
- Make the Before relatable: The Before stage must describe a problem your subscriber actually has. Use language and details that make them think "that sounds exactly like me."
- Make the After vivid and specific: The After stage should be detailed enough that the subscriber can imagine the transformed state. "Faster reporting" is weak. "You walk into your Monday morning meeting with a complete report generated in seconds while your coffee brews" is vivid.
- Make the Bridge feel like the natural step: The solution should feel like the obvious next step from After. "Here is exactly how to get there" rather than "Buy our product." Frame the bridge as guidance, not a sales pitch.
- Use social proof in the Bridge: "2,000 marketers have already made this switch" strengthens the bridge by showing others have successfully crossed it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Use BAB when the outcome (the After state) is more compelling than the problem (the Before state). Use PAS when the pain of the current problem is stronger than the appeal of the solution. BAB works well for aspirational offers (courses, upgrades, premium products). PAS works well for remedial offers (fixing problems, avoiding consequences).
The Before should be 1-3 sentences — enough to acknowledge the subscriber's reality. The After should be 3-5 sentences — detailed enough to make the subscriber want it. The Bridge should be 2-4 sentences presenting the solution clearly with a CTA.
Yes. A BAB subject line hints at the contrast: "The 5 hours you are wasting on reports" (Before) and the email body delivers the After and Bridge. The subject line implies the Before state and creates curiosity about the After state.
Use specific, concrete details. Vague positive outcomes are not convincing. "You will have more free time" is weak. "You will leave the office at 5pm every Friday instead of 7pm" is specific and believable. Add social proof and before-and-after data where possible.
Making the Bridge feel disconnected from the Before and After. The solution must feel like the natural and obvious path from the subscriber's current state to the desired future. If the Bridge feels like a separate sales pitch rather than the logical next step, the framework fails.
